What is CPT?
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) is an evidence-based type of cognitive-behavioral therapy found to be effective for treating post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). CPT focuses on teaching a set of skills that will help you challenge these negative thoughts and gain control over the impact they have on your life. CPT teaches you how to evaluate and change the upsetting thoughts you have had since your trauma. By changing your thoughts, you can change how you feel.
How does it work?
CPT is usually done over the course of 12 structured sessions with practice assignments completed outside of sessions. CPT is based on the social cognitive theory of PTSD, and focuses on repairing the damage done by a traumatic event to your beliefs about yourself and the world. By offering specific cognitive restructuring skills, CPT allows you to challenge these negative thoughts and interpretations (stuck points), gain a healthier perspective about the trauma, cope better with any future triggers, and move forward with your life.
Dr. Kenna is a Certified CPT Therapist and can discuss more details with you about this form of treatment for PTSD. For more information on CPT, visit http://www.cptforptsd.com
